What I Do
- Report: Details ranging from scientific facts to personal narratives to complex webs of information. I maintain relationships with sources and offer up a consistent flow of story ideas.
- Write: Stories—short and long, light-hearted or heavily reported, on deadline or over time—on education, health and other topics. I also write scripts for audio and video stories.
- Shoot: Audio, photos and video. I have my own audio recording equipment, HD Flip video camera and digital SLR still camera. While not a formally-trained photojournalist, I understand moment, composition and the importance of varied wide/medium/tight framing, and when working solo I can consistently get decent images (find examples of my photography and video work on these pages).
- Edit: Print and online stories, whether told through words, sounds, pictures, videos or combinations thereof. I have managed freelance reporters and regularly used audio editing software, Soundslides and Final Cut Pro.
- Produce: Multimedia stories and packages, weaving together many components and playing to the strengths of each medium to create cohesive, compelling sets of coverage in print and online.
